Meet Lauren

Why I applied for The Scheme

I’ve always been an avid reader, interested the art of storytelling and the creation of narrative, and so working with books sounded like the dream!

What I got from The Scheme

It was a great introduction to publishing and an extremely educational experience all round. I met lots of wonderful people, developed a range of different skills and accumulated more books than I could possibly get through!

What surprised me

Seeing the industry from the inside really shows how much hard work goes into making a book. The many departments and people, from editorial to marketing and publicity, design and production, finance, sales, legal, HR… There is a huge network of brilliant individuals who all work collectively to make the final product the best it can possibly be. It’s fascinating to see this process in motion and to become a part of it.

What I’m doing now

I’m currently working at The Bodley Head in Vintage on various non-fiction books. I’m most excited about an incredible nature memoir we’ve recently published by Barry Lopez called Horizon, The Outlaw Ocean by Ian Urbina which will be published in October, and Entangled Life by Merlin Sheldrake coming next year.

Why should you apply

The Scheme will open many doors whether you decide publishing is for you or not. It’s a great way to learn new skills and tap into an industry notoriously difficult and competitive to get into. There’s a huge amount of thought that goes into The Scheme so you’ll have many interesting training days and fun workshops, as well as a network of support which remains throughout. It’s the best access scheme to get into publishing, so if you’re interested in books – apply!

My top tip

Be yourself! Be bold.

Ask as many questions as you can, speak to people from different departments to see what they do, and don’t be afraid to ask people to go for coffee. Finally: make the most of the network you have on The Scheme – other Schemers will become your friends! Meeting other people on The Scheme this year has been a highlight of the whole experience.

Good luck!
